The essence of the Chaplaincy work at Africa University is to serve the United Methodist Church, to provide opportunities for the students and staff to grow in service to all and to foster a ‘hope filled’ spirituality. Our mission is to create and provide resources that enable the university community of different academic, professional, cultural and religious backgrounds to grow into deeper Christian spiritual maturity and growth. The University Chapel popularly known as KwangLim Chapel is a house of prayer and is treated with respect and reverence.

We focus on the promotion and coordination of spiritual and religious life activities. Chaplaincy is more than moral care; it is a wholesome caring of persons in need. It is a compassionate ministry to all. We continue to:

  • Offer pastoral and spiritual support to the university community
  • Support the academic mission of the University by facilitating and encouraging initiatives concerned with the moral, ethical and spiritual dimensions of the University.
  • Create opportunities for students and staff to serve the university with dedication and passion
  • Create opportunities for spiritual growth and maturity
  • Provide spiritual services and develop programs of a denominational nature through the formation of fellowship groups and clubs while striving to promote freedom of worship
  • Nourish our community spiritually  through E-Chaplaincy Platforms  in order  for all to remain connected with their faith groups where ever they are in the midst of Covid-19.

Under normal situations that is when operating fully on campus, Chaplaincy is supported by the following committees.

Community Services

Visiting the Sick

Chaplaincy visits members of the university community in hospital or sick at home to offer support and encouragement. In this Covid -19 season the infected, affected and the sick can receive online chaplaincy ‘visit’ through whatsapp, and phone calls.

Counselling and Guidance Services

Chaplaincy operates an open door policy and offers counselling services to members of the university community as per need.

We offer pastoral support for students and staff, regardless of religious affiliation.

We offer:

  • Confidential, non-judgemental listening.
  • Help in time of crisis.
  • Links with specialist sources of help (referrals).

Chaplaincy tries to provide support as quickly as we can. Counselling support is available by phone, email or video conversation. No issue is too big or small- anything that stresses you we are just a phone call away- from studies to relationships!!

Chaplaincy continue to operate remotely throughout the COVID-19 closure period.  For appointments, chaplain can be reached on the listed contact details above.

Bereavement and Deaths

Chaplaincy coordinates ministry to the bereaved members of the university community. Students and staff should inform Chaplain accordingly. Travelling and attending funerals of students and staff members is under strict guidance given the current operating environment we find ourselves in.

Community Outreach processes

Chaplaincy engages in charity work through encouraging staff and students to assist the vulnerable in communities when need arises.
